Some things I do add greatly to the build time.

I haven't been paying much attention, so am not sure what has been doing this. And now have very long build and run times.

What kinds of "programming" activities increase this time, and what kinds of things can I do to make sure my build and run times are as fast as possible?

Adding New Broadcast and Receive Behaviours that operate across layers massively increases build time.

      For me.
